The Mets trade deadline is complete, and it’s headlined by the acquisition of infield prospect Jefferson Rojas from the Cubs. To get the highly touted Rojas, the Mets gave up pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor. Both Holmes and Taylor were good Mets, but it didn’t make sense to finish out the season on a lousy team. Rojas is only 21, and already in Double A, so he has more room for growth on an already good skill set. Luke Weaver was also traded for a highly rated infield prospect. Sammy Stafura from the Pirates is another 21-year-old who is not as highly ranked as Rojas but has shown fast improvements in his game. Stafura also grew up a diehard Mets fan, so there’s a hometown connection fans can share with him. Overall, the trade deadline was a replenishment of the Mets’ farm system as the Mets aim to get younger and cheaper over the next few years.
