Spring training has the Mets with a good issue to have in the outfield: too many players at the same positions. Left field which seems to be where Brandon Nimmo will play. Center field is where Harrison Bader is slated to play. Right field is tricky because Starling Marte and DJ Stewart are in competition. Marte was out most of last season which made room for DJ Stewart. So far, Marte has been outplaying DJ in spring training. Marte at his age really can only be in right field so DJ is the outlier. DJ can, if needed, play left field but I don”t like that fit. Nimmo is a better defender. The outfield will get more jammed when top prospect Drew Gilbert is called up. Gilbert is a center fielder and has rarely played in the corners. David Stearns has said that he cares most about defense. Judging by his ideas when Gilbert is called up DJ will get traded. If Gilbert takes Bader”s position then Bader will still be on the team because of his defense.
