This past Wednesday, the Nets had a historic draft class; they were the first team in NBA draft history to select five players in the first round. However, none of the five chosen players are projected to have the top-end talent needed to propel a team to sustained success. Their first selection, Egor Demin, was a heralded college basketball recruit a year ago, but his shine greatly dissipated in his freshman year at BYU. Demin’s skills are his playmaking and size, and those skills are nice but he lacks a refined scoring game, which is necessary to succeed in the modern NBA. The Nets made redundant picks with the rest of their four selections by choosing players who are skilled playmakers with a lack of scoring, with their selections of Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf. The variety of the Nets draft can be seen by the picks of explosive guard Drake Powell and versatile big man Danny Wolf. A historical draft class was made, yet the substance of a draft class is the ultimate decider in a team’s future fortune.
