Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil has suffered an oblique injury that will cause him to miss the start of the season. McNeil’s absence has opened up a spot on the roster at second base for either Brett Baty or Luisangel Acuña. It appears that Baty will get the roster spot due to his good performance in spring training. This isn’t the right decision, in my opinion. Acuña is more of a natural second baseman and is more athletic than Baty. Acuña has had more reps at second base than Baty and has played the position in the majors. The pure athleticism comparison favors Acuña because he has better speed than Baty. Acuña’s speed also makes him a better fielder than Baty. The roster decision is still in flux and this final week of spring training might make a difference.
